Rancho Cucamonga Personalized Learning Center TK-12

isabellacantu-web Name: Isabella Cantu
Age: 17 Grade: 12
I chose: Rancho Cucamonga U-LAB
Why? To enjoy the interaction with my teacher and other students while being Homeschooled.
Isabella says: “Ms. Ryder is a really funny teacher, I like when she explains stuff. She breaks it down into real life situations that make it easy to understand.”
Isabella is studying Japanese so that when she visits her host family in Japan she’ll be able to communicate with them and others. Her advice to new students is to explore their interests, find what makes them happy and pursue it, always set aside time to do the things you love and, you’re only young once so enjoy it to the best of your ability!

Rancho Cucamonga Personalized Learning Center offers dynamic programs for K-12 students. The Rancho center includes Discovery Col-LAB-orative for TK-8 students and U-Lab for students in grades 9-12.  All students receive a Chromebook as part of the hybrid model ensuring easy access to online courses, programs, and resources. We make connecting easy!

  • Discovery Col-LAB-orative for TK-8 students is a hybrid flexible learning program providing structured classroom activities three days a week along with two home study days. Discovery Col-LAB-orative meets on a multi-age campus where students actively participate with the community of learners. Personalized home study days are designed by the lab Education Specialist in collaboration with the parent and student. Parents, ESes and students meet monthly to create and review student goals in order to ensure that students are on the road to individual growth and success.
  • The Discovery Col-LAB-orative program will provide a cross-grade-level thematic curriculum with an emphasis on personalized I CAN! Mastery and student discovery.
  • Students become part of the learning center community by participating in multi-age campus activities such as after school clubs, sports, excursions or by exploring a special interest with their peers on a home discovery day. Parents are a big part of our community and are encouraged to be on site volunteering and building relationships with fellow parents.
  • U-Lab driven University style learning. U-Lab is an independent study program offering a flexible learning environment for students enrolled in grades 9–12. U-Lab students meet on a multi-age campus where high school students can actively participate with the whole community of learners. High school students in the U-Lab program share their skills and passions with younger students, discover new interests, collaborate with peers, explore college and career options, or simply enjoy collaborative study time in a relaxed environment designed for them and by them. The U-Lab offers a small family-friendly environment for high schoolers who would like to pick and choose their own academic path. The U-Lab is designed for students to pick and choose their own academic path by “mixing and matching” learning methods. Choices include university style courses taught by a “live” teacher, online virtual courses, small-group workshop seminar courses, student and parent designed courses or traditional independent study. Course offerings include our high-interest Integrated courses. U-Lab students may expand their interests with access to internships and CTE courses. U-Lab students will be on campus 1-3 days per week enjoying a flexible environment. U-Lab students and their parents connect with their ES at the Personalized Learning Center for monthly lesson plan meetings.

We offer homeschool families a variety of unique, year-long workshops to enrich their educational experience. Our workshops incorporate academics and the arts to inspire individual interests and passions. Our nurturing staff partner with parents to support educational progress in a safe environment for positive social development.

*How do we personalize learning for each student?

    • Building relationships and getting to know the students, parents, and their Education Specialist is a key component in personalizing!
    • We personalize learning by giving students various options of classes that cater to not only their interest but involving parents in the process.
    • Our teachers personalize learning by setting goals for their students based on each child’s individual need and then provide multiple paths to meet those goals.
    • We personalize learning by offering smaller class sizes and a team-oriented approach to insure success. Each member of our teaching team brings different skills and training.
    • We personalize learning by working with our students and their individual learning styles. We look at how they learn: either by verbal instruction, visual aids, and perhaps whole body. With our customized lessons, we can focus on their abilities and work with our students to apply their own individual strengths to their own learning situations.
    • We also personalize learning by giving students extension activities to do at home which can be used to supplement their homeschooling curriculum.
    • The learning starts with the learner. Learning is tailored to the individual needs of each learner, not just to the “one size fits all.”
    • In the ICAN math class, we plan to personalize learning by tailoring our math centers to each student’s unique style of learning and personal needs. Our goal is to offer alternative and engaging options to students who feel ready to progress to the next level (math games, puzzles, etc.) and work more in depth with those students who are struggling with certain concepts.

    *Why personalize learning?

    • Students are more engaged and cooperative in a personalized learning environment, which allows them to successfully achieve their goals.
    • Personalized learning promotes a “give and take” environment to build leaders and team-oriented adults instead of test taking robot.
    • Personalized learning enables a student to seek more out of their education. By incorporating this personalized learning, it allows room for more student inquiry and also develops a passion for academics.
    • Personalized learning inspires students to think outside of the box and encourages them to become actively engaged in their education through passion and excitement.

    • Appropriate, workshop related goals are set for each lesson taught at the Learning Center. Student tasks are then individualized, taking each student’s abilities and learning styles into account.
    • Students have the opportunity to set goals to enrich their own educational journey in Destination Imagination and First Lego League (as a team and individuals; we make sure to celebrate our goals being reached and work together to help individuals reach their own personal goals).
    • In Kid Town the students set life skills goals such as knowing how the community functions and balancing their own check registers.
