Sandy Griffin

Academy Teacher

Education

I received my California Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from Azusa Pacific University after discovering that I loved to teach. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to teach 4-6th grade at a private school in northern California as I transitioned from engineering to education. My experience in the field of education includes teaching multiple subjects for 4-6th grade and 8th grade science. I also have experience tutoring 1st through 12th grade, primarily in math and science. Prior to my teaching career, I was an engineer working at IBM in the field of materials science. I graduated from the University of California at Irvine with Bachelor Degrees in chemistry and mechanical engineering. Shortly thereafter, I attended North Carolina State University for my Master’s Degree in materials science and engineering.

Favorite Hobbies

My most loved hobby is classical dance, especially jazz, ballet, and tap. I also enjoy hiking, golfing, camping, star gazing, arts and crafts.

Favorite Books

My favorite book is JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit. This is one book that I truly enjoy reading over and over. I like Tolkien’s use of language and the sense of adventure that emerges in the main character, Bilbo Baggins. I also enjoy reading other types of books, particularly mysteries and adventures.

Favorite Subject

Math and science were always my favorite subjects in school when I was a student, but since I began teaching I have found that I draw great pleasure from making connections to all subjects and helping my students see these connections.

Fun Facts

I am from a large family. I am the 7th of 9 children. I absolutely enjoyed growing up in this atmosphere. I also love observing and interacting with most animals.
