Riley Hatch, 10, who recently finished the 5th grade with Springs’ Casa Montessori Murrieta program, will spend the summer learning to be a junior lifeguard. She will swim, engage in strength training and learn life-saving skills.

A junior lifeguard, she said, helps in the shallow children’s area at the pool. The Red Cross, she continued, certifies lifeguards at age 15; a junior lifeguard may volunteer at pools at age 12. The Menifee resident has been taking swim lessons since age 3. “I love to swim,” she said. “I always liked to watch the lifeguards at the beach and pool. I thought it would be a job in which I could help people.” She swims every chance she gets, she said, and she would one day like to be a beach lifeguard. Riley joined the Montessori program in 2012, as she was interested in a program that had both classroom and Homeschool days. Her favorite subject is math. Away from school, she likes gymnastics. Casa Montessori Murrieta has been a good fit for her, and she’s looking forward to 6th grade there. She said: “I love this school. It has been a great experience for me. I am thankful that I get to go to Springs.” She added, “I also like that the teachers really care a lot about the students.”
