KEYS Student Dances Competitively

Jenna Blevens, age 14, is a 9th grade student homeschooled through the KEYS independent study program.  She lives in Fallbrook.  She is in her first year with Springs.  She’s grateful for her participation in the KEYS program because it gives her the flexibility to devote 4-6 hours per day, six days a week to dance practice, which has enabled her to successfully compete in dance events.

Jenna began her dance training at age 9 after watching the television show So You Think You Can Dance.  She explained, “I like dance because there is always an opportunity to get better.  The dance community is very supportive and I think of my dance company as part of my family.”

She trains in many styles of dance including jazz, lyrical, contemporary and pointe.  She currently trains and competes with Prestige Dance Company in Murrieta.  She enjoys performing and will compete with her dance company at both the regional and national level beginning this month of January.  She will compete with a jazz solo, a jazz duet, a lyrical small group, a contemporary small group, a jazz large group and a production routine during this dance season.

She said, “Competitions are difficult; they can be stressful.  The most rewarding thing is when, after much hard work, you perfect a move you have been working on.”
