Homeschool Teen Earns HAM Radio License

Ian Phillips, age 13, a Homeschool student in the 8th grade, has passed an examination to obtain an FCC license to operate an amateur or HAM radio.  He studied for the examination with four friends from Boy Scouts, and earned a Boy Scout Radio merit badge for his efforts.  He’s now saving to purchase his own HAM radio.

He said, “I look forward to using it to communicate with others.  Also, I can be kept informed in the event of an emergency.”

Ian lives in Crestline, which is in the San Bernardino Mountains near Lake Arrowhead.  He has homeschooled since grade 2, with his mother, Nadia Phillips, serving as his Education Specialist.

He likes the program: “It’s been great! It allows me the freedom and time to pursue my interests.”

In addition to the HAM radio, Ian’s other hobbies include playing the fife in the Mountain Fifes and Drums, working on an Eagle Scout project and playing video games.  He also volunteers at his church in the AV booth, running the projection for the pastor’s sermon, and with the worship team.  After he graduates from school, he plans to pursue a career in IT management.
