Homeschool Junior Named Carson Scholar

Rose Kelley, a 17-year-old junior Homeschool student who lives in Oceanside, has received a $1,000 Carson Scholars Fund award to help fund her college education. She has been designated a “Carson scholar,” and was honored with a medal and trophy at a recent awards banquet.

The award is named for Dr. Ben Carson, who is HUD Secretary under President Donald Trump. Rose was selected because she was deemed to be part of a select group of students who “excel academically and are dedicated to serving their communities.” Several speakers at the awards dinner, including keynote speaker Jack Canfield and Carson’s wife, Candy, encouraged Rose and the other scholars present to work hard in school and give back to their communities. Rose said, “My parents were very happy to celebrate my academic excellence, community service, and for receiving this award which I had worked so hard on.”

She devoted two weeks to writing and revising her scholarship application, sending it to family and friends for input.

Rose is grateful for her Springs education because it “has worked exceptionally well for me. It allows me to take college-prep classes I need with the flexibility to pursue my goals.” She has taken two CTE classes, photography and Photoshop, and completed a photography internship with the assistance of Judy Adair. Rose noted, “Taking these three classes with Mrs. Adair has helped me to form a lasting connection with her. She has helped me setting up and getting funding for my photography exhibitions and I often call her when I need help with something in the photography area.”

She was also grateful to her ES, Wendy Bucaro, who “helped guide the whole educational process at Springs and has given me valuable guidance. Working with her over the years as a Homeschool student has provided the opportunity for her to write meaningful letters of recommendation.” Her favorite subjects are photography and Spanish. Upon graduation, Rose hopes to attend Mira Costa Community College and UCI.
Her hobby is photography. She said, “I love capturing my surroundings and being able to share my view of the world through the lens of my camera.” She began shooting photographs at age 5 and has had three photography exhibitions in the past year. She recently did her first paid photo shoot and is working on her first collection of images for a local business.
